Fans loved the climactic battle between the demon hunters and Upper Moon 6 demons Daki and Gyutaro.

Looking back on the fight scene, some fans questioned why Gyutaro was hiding inside Daki.

The story doesn’t explain their reasoning. But the answer can be found in exploring their history before becoming demons.

As humans, Daki and Gyutaro had an exceptionally difficult life of poverty and suffering. After tragedy struck, they made a pact to stay together no matter what.

Becoming demons gave them terrible power, but it maintained their bond. Gyutaro shielded himself in Daki to honor their promise and ensure they would never be separated again.

Examining their origins clarifies their demonic partnership and makes their eventual defeat more poignant.

The Haunting Tale of Gyutaro and Daki

In his human life, Gyutaro was sickly and deformed, considered repulsive by most. Even his mother tried to kill him due to his appearance. He endured constant verbal abuse in the vain world of the Yoshiwara red-light district.

But when his younger sister Ume was born, remarkably beautiful, Gyutaro found purpose. Though feeble, he did his best to provide for Ume as she trained to become an elite courtesan. He used his off-putting looks to intimidate those who mistreated her.

The siblings supported each other, one physically weak but lovely, the other ugly yet fiercely protective. For a time, they managed to survive the harshness of Yoshiwara. However, tragedy struck when a samurai burned Ume horribly after an altercation.

This backstory gives greater meaning to Gyutaro and Daki’s demonic bond – two outcasts clinging to the only person who cared for them. Their devotion persisted even in monstrous reincarnation. Understanding these origins makes their eventual defeat more poignant.

Gyutaro was dedicated to staying by his sister’s side to keep her safe. But the one time he wasn’t there to protect Ume, the unthinkable happened – she was killed.

Overcome by grief and rage, Gyutaro accepted the demon blood from Upper Moon 2, Doma, to gain the power for revenge.

Ume also became a demon, reborn as Daki. As siblings turned demons, the stronger Gyutaro vowed to never leave Daki’s side again.

He likely harbored immense guilt for not being there when Ume needed him most.

So when they battled the demon slayers of the corps, Gyutaro concealed himself inside Daki as an extra safeguard.

After failing to protect Ume in life, demon Gyutaro would take no chance of losing demon Daki. His habit of hiding within her sprang from profound trauma and determination to preserve their bond eternally.

Gyutaro believed that as long as he was with Daki, his greater demonic power could protect them both. But he was proven devastatingly wrong. The teamwork of Tanjiro and the other demon slayers succeeded in decapitating the Upper Moon 6 duo.

In their final moments of consciousness, Tanjiro sensed lingering tension between demon Daki and Gyutaro. He wondered if they were able to reconcile before their deaths.
