The Jeff Bridges action-thriller The Old Man is scheduled to return in the fall. A launch date has been announced. Based on Tom Perry’s 2017 novel, the adaptation will have its premiere in June 2022. Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges plays the main, an ordinary man with a perilous history and multiple aliases.
The seven-episode first season, which was developed by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine and starred John Lithgow, E. J. Bonilla, Alia Shawkat, and Amy Brenneman in supporting roles, was well-received by critics.
Speaking at FX’s panel during the Winter 2024 press tour hosted by the Television Critics Association, FX CEO John Landgraf announced that The Old Man season 2 will debut later in 2024. Whenever the show returns, it will have been two years since its debut.
Why You Should Watch The Old Man?
The Old Man makes a strong first impression. Director Jon Watts, who helmed the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy, brings his flair for suspense and action to the first two episodes. Bridges makes his television debut as Dan Chase, the show’s eponymous elderly man who craves solitude.
But his past finally catches up with him, and the first episode closes with a terrifying set piece that demonstrates Dan’s resourcefulness and deadly nature in a tight spot. Unfortunately, the momentum of the FX series is lost.
Subsequent episodes give the gifted Old Man cast far too many scenes that are dominated by monologues, and whole sequences are made out of poorly lit flashbacks. The characters then converse about serious topics far too frequently in the present.
It turns into something other than the exciting adventure that was first anticipated. Even with the weaker episodes in the middle, the conclusion of season 1 suggests that things might get better.
Dan and his old friend Harold (Lithgow) lose someone important to them, which raises the possibility that season two may keep the focus on the characters while also returning to the memorable first episodes. The FX series is all about combining the intimate with the big stakes.
Three decades ago, Faraz Hamzad (Pej Vahdat), the commander of the Afghan guerrilla movement, was being supported by Chase and Harold, former CIA collaborators who are now higher up in the FBI, but their operation backfired.
After falling in love with the rebel’s wife Belour Hamzad (Leem Lubany), young Chase (Bill Heck) fled to the United States to start a new life. Angela Adams (Shawkat), the daughter, was a part of that existence.
It is revealed near the end of The Old Man’s first season that Faraz is Angela’s father. Angela and Faraz (played by Navid Negahban in the current day) come to a close in the finale. In the last episode, Angela’s safety and well-being become the central concern for Chase, Harold, and Faraz, who all regard her as a daughter in some capacity.
However, the situation’s realities are nuanced. When Angela is kidnapped and brought to Faraz, she is unaware that he is her father. There are several issues with Zoe (Brenneman), too, since she is attracted to Dan’s life’s perils.
