In the previous season, the Atlanta Falcons struggled with subpar quarterback performances, ranking low in various quarterback metrics. With Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke occupying the 32nd and 40th spots in passer rating, and the 30th and 31st spots in expected points added per pass attempt among quarterbacks with at least 125 passes.

The Falcons are prioritizing finding a solution at the quarterback position, as confirmed by general manager Terry Fontenot.

Addressing the team’s quarterback situation, Fontenot emphasized the significance of the offseason in this regard. He expressed excitement about exploring options both within and outside the organization, involving key individuals like Raheem Morris, Zac Robinson, T.J. Yates, Ken Zampese, and DJ Williams.

Fontenot emphasized an open-minded approach, indicating that the team is willing to consider trades, free agency, or the draft to secure the right solution.

Notably, Fontenot’s statement about not closing any doors contrasts with the team’s previous stance when the Ravens used the franchise tag on Lamar Jackson last offseason. The Falcons had then quickly communicated that they would not pursue Jackson.

By keeping options open for trades, free agency, and the draft, the Falcons might be considering various avenues to address their quarterback needs, potentially including players like Justin Fields, who could become available after the Bears acquired the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

Fontenot neither confirmed nor denied the Falcons’ pursuit of a quarterback but emphasized the importance of evaluating players at every stage of their career, considering both their draft year and their NFL performance when making decisions about potential acquisitions.

As the Falcons hold the No. 8 overall pick in the upcoming draft, they have a chance to secure a top quarterback either by retaining their position or engaging in trade discussions. Despite recent first-round selections focusing on skill position players like Kyle Pitts, Drake London, and Bijan Robinson, the team recognizes the pivotal role a quarterback plays in elevating their offensive capabilities to contender status.
