New York Giants Add Veteran QB Drew Lock

The New York Giants maintain their confidence in Daniel Jones as their quarterback but have left room for the possibility of selecting a first-round draft pick at the position in April. Additionally, they have reportedly added veteran competition by reaching an agreement with former Seattle Seahawks backup Drew Lock on a one-year contract.

According to ESPN, Lock’s deal is valued at $5 million, fully guaranteed, making him one of the fifth-highest-paid backups at his position entering the 2024 season. Seahawks general manager John Schneider disclosed to 710 Seattle Sports on Thursday that Lock joined the Giants after they presented him with the opportunity to compete for the starting role.

Schneider mentioned that Lock may perceive the situation akin to Baker Mayfield’s move to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023.

While publicly expressing optimism about Jones’ return from a midseason ACL tear by training camp, the Giants have secured experienced insurance in Lock. With 23 career starts from his tenure in Seattle and with the Denver Broncos, Lock brings valuable experience to the team.

Originally selected by the Broncos in the second round of the 2019 draft, the same year the Giants drafted Jones sixth overall, Lock spent three seasons in Denver. Notably, he achieved a 4-1 record in five starts as a rookie but faced challenges with turnovers as a full-time starter in 2020.

Following a trade to the Seahawks as part of the blockbuster deal for Russell Wilson ahead of the 2022 season, Lock served as Geno Smith’s primary backup for two years. He made two emergency starts for the Seahawks in 2023, earning recognition from fans for orchestrating a comeback upset against the Philadelphia Eagles.
