There were doubts surrounding Joel Embiid’s return for Tuesday’s clash against the Thunder, but just before tip-off, reports confirmed the reigning MVP would make his first appearance since January.

The Thunder may now rue the timing of his comeback, as Embiid’s impressive display powered the 76ers to a crucial victory in their quest to dodge the play-in tournament.

Embiid’s return after an extended absence naturally raised questions about his effectiveness. However, the star center left no doubt about his impact, showcasing his skill and determination to lead Philadelphia’s comeback charge.

In his limited 29 minutes on the court, Embiid contributed 24 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals. Although these numbers may seem modest compared to his pre-injury averages of over 35 points per game, they were a promising sign of his return to form.

Coach Nick Nurse opted not to disclose if Embiid would face a minutes restriction, but the MVP did play fewer minutes than some teammates. Nevertheless, Embiid’s presence was felt when it mattered most — during the decisive moments of the game.

With Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams sidelined, the 76ers found themselves trailing by eight points with under five minutes remaining. Yet, a determined Embiid spearheaded a remarkable turnaround, scoring crucial points and making key defensive plays.

Embiid’s flawless performance from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, sinking all eight attempts, sealed the victory for Philadelphia.

Looking ahead, the 76ers have a favorable schedule with four of their final six games against sub-.500 teams, including matchups against the Spurs and Pistons. Their primary focus remains keeping Embiid healthy for the playoffs, potentially leading to a game of rest during an upcoming back-to-back.

Currently holding the No. 8 seed in the East, Philadelphia eyes a climb up the standings. A move to the No. 7 or even No. 6 seed would be significant, providing a direct entry to the playoffs or avoiding the play-in tournament altogether.

As of now, the 76ers sit two games behind Indiana for the final guaranteed playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. With Embiid back in action and firing on all cylinders, Philadelphia’s postseason ambitions have been reignited, setting the stage for an exciting finish to the regular season.
