Omar Khan, the Steelers’ general manager, is nearing the completion of his offseason agenda with one pivotal move remaining. Amidst a flurry of earlier transactions during free agency, Khan is actively pursuing the acquisition of a veteran receiver to fill the void left by the departure of Diontae Johnson.

Despite adding veteran receivers Van Jefferson and Quez Watkins, the Steelers view these signings as bolstering depth rather than directly replacing Johnson. Their focus remains steadfast on securing a suitable replacement for the talented wideout.

La Canfora shared insights on the Steelers’ pursuit during an episode of the “In The Huddle” podcast, suggesting that a significant move could materialize imminently. He indicated that the team’s efforts to land a veteran receiver could culminate before the draft, during the draft process, or shortly after.

Steelers’ Wide Receiver Dilemma: Assessing Free-Agent and Trade Options

While the free-agent market for receivers has diminished, notable names such as Tyler Boyd, Michael Thomas, Russell Gage, Hunter Renfrow, DJ Chark, Mecole Hardman, and Michael Gallup are still available. Additionally, potential trade targets like Tee Higgins and Justin Jefferson from the Bengals and Vikings, respectively, add intrigue to the situation with uncertainty surrounding their futures.

The Steelers already have a primary wide receiver in George Pickens, making it unlikely for them to pursue trades for Higgins or Jefferson, especially considering potential salary demands and divisional rivalry dynamics. As for Tyler Lockett, his availability for trade depends on Seattle’s willingness to entertain offers.

Reportedly, financial considerations were a significant factor in stalled negotiations between the Steelers and Boyd. However, with Boyd still unsigned and the Steelers still in need of a veteran wideout, there’s a possibility of renewed discussions between the parties.

Given the ongoing vacancy at the wide receiver position and the Steelers’ proactive approach in free agency, it seems inevitable that Khan and the team will address the need for Johnson’s replacement. When this occurs, it will mark the end of a successful free agency period for the Steelers, which notably included the acquisitions of quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.
