The most eagerly awaited plot of Season 3 will likely involve watching to see if the budding romance between Tyler James Williams’s character Janine and fellow instructor Gregory will ignite. We’re here for the classic will-they-won’t-they story that has been told numerous times by characters like Jim and Pam in The Office or Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd in Moonlighting.
Principal Ava is also introducing some ground-breaking Ivy League concepts to the public school in Philadelphia. Along with some new faces on school, we’ll get to meet up with Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter), Jacob (Chris Perfetti), and Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis).
Recap
The majority of the episode is set outside of the Abbott school grounds, despite Janine’s ex-boyfriend Tariq (Zack Fox) making a triumphant return. In Barbara’s class, Tariq is seen with his “child,” the son of a female he has been dating for a few weeks.
Season 3 seems to have introduced two new regular places to its cast: the district offices, where Janine works off-site, and a neighboring bar that she and her former Abbott friends frequently visit. Even while Janine’s new work gives her the opportunity to socialize with Ava on occasion.
Who tries to recruit Janine as a district “mole” for Abbott—we find it difficult to imagine Abbott functioning without her. Abbott seems strange without Janine, despite her continued efforts to revitalize her former workplace by hiring a sign language interpreter for Jacob’s class.
When will Janine come back to teach Abbott’s students and go on her slow burn with Gregory? Or will Gregory’s “roster” of women—stated by the students, not by me—remain unchanged for the duration of the academic year?
