Kodansha has announced the debut of Ashita no Joe’s first English print, marking a significant moment for one of the most influential manga series in history.

Renowned for its impact on both the sports and fighting genres, this legendary anime and manga will soon be accessible to millions worldwide.

The revelation coincides with the series’ 50th anniversary since its conclusion in 1973, underscoring its enduring popularity in Japan and its profound influence on subsequent manga creators.

Kodansha’s decision to release the English version in December 2024, as reported by ICv2, reflects the longstanding anticipation for such a translation.

Exclusive Deluxe Set: Manga Masterpiece in 8 Volumes

The forthcoming English edition will be presented in a deluxe set comprising 8 jumbo volumes, each encapsulating approximately 2.5 volumes of the original 20. Additionally, a digital option will cater to fans’ preferences.

While the anticipated price of $59.95 may appear steep, it mirrors the exceptional quality synonymous with Kodansha’s deluxe manga prints. Notably, this price estimation by ICv2 may be subject to adjustment upon Kodansha’s release of further details and pre-orders.

Kodansha believes that the manga market is maturing, as well as looking for past manga classics that have never been translated into English.

This work is a true masterpiece that Japan is proud of. […] We consider it an honor and a labor of love to introduce such an important manga masterpiece to a new generation of fans. And we hope that this new edition will be as much of an inspiration as it was when it originally debuted in Japan.

Iconic Ashita No Joe Manga Expands Global Influence

With over 20 million copies sold, Ashita no Joe stands as a monumental presence in the manga landscape, boasting multiple awards and inspiring various adaptations, including anime, live-action series, and a modern remake titled MegaloBox.

Its resonance among Japanese middle-class workers and college students during the late 1960s, rooted in the relatability and inspiration drawn from protagonist Yabuki Joe’s working-class struggles, solidified its place as a cultural phenomenon.

The series’ influence transcends its original medium, serving as a beacon for iconic manga such as Hajime No Ippo, Dragon Ball, Naruto, Slam Dunk, and One Piece.

Takamori and Chiba’s artistic legacy permeates numerous series and genres, evident in recurring themes and imagery, such as the iconic scenes of simultaneous punches or characters defiantly seated.

Ashita no Joe’s profound impact on the manga industry is indisputable, and with Kodansha’s forthcoming English release, its reach will extend to a much broader international audience, ensuring its enduring legacy for generations to come.
