Despite the departure of Russell Wilson, the Denver Broncos are still charting uncertain waters, with veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton conspicuously absent from the team’s voluntary workouts as he seeks a new contract.
Sutton is currently under contract for two more years as part of a four-year, $60.8 million extension inked in November 2021. However, with only $2 million in guaranteed money remaining, Sutton likely aims to secure a new deal that is more aligned with his anticipated market value, especially considering the escalating salaries for receivers.
Despite the Broncos’ quarterback instability, Sutton has thrived since entering the league in 2018. Despite ranking 56th in the league in targets, Sutton earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2019 and snagged 10 touchdowns last season. Impressively, he has continued to produce following a torn ACL injury in 2020.
This season, he is set to ascend into the top 10 in career franchise statistics for receptions, yards, and touchdown receptions. Notably, Sutton has achieved this success without the luxury of a Hall of Fame quarterback throwing him the ball for most of his career.
Sutton, along with former teammate Jerry Jeudy, has frequently been the subject of trade rumors in recent years. While Jeudy was traded to Cleveland this offseason, Sutton remains in Denver, enduring the challenges of playing in an offense still searching for a franchise quarterback.
