When the Buffalo Bills made the decision to entertain trade offers for Stefon Diggs, they were open to negotiating with nearly every team in the NFL except one: the Kansas City Chiefs.

Former NFL quarterback Chris Simms revealed on “PFT Live” Thursday that Diggs had the green light to explore trade options with any team except the Chiefs.

“From what I do know, he was allowed to seek a trade from anybody in the league except the Kansas City Chiefs,” Simms stated. “That’s what I’ve been told by multiple people. He was allowed to do that. The Chiefs were the only team they weren’t going to trade [to].”

This singular detail speaks volumes about the rivalry between Buffalo and Kansas City. Since 2020, the Bills have faced off against the Chiefs in the postseason three times, losing each encounter.

Bills Refuse to Aid Chiefs, Trade Diggs to Texans Instead

Clearly, the Bills have no intentions of aiding their rival Chiefs, which explains why they adamantly refused to entertain the idea of sending Diggs to Kansas City under any circumstances. While it remains unclear if the Chiefs reached out to Buffalo regarding a potential trade, it appears that the Bills were not receptive to any inquiries from their AFC adversary.

Ultimately, the Buffalo Bills made a significant move by striking a deal with the Houston Texans, sending shockwaves throughout the NFL. In exchange for wide receiver Stefon Diggs and two draft picks (a 2024 sixth-rounder and a 2025 fifth-rounder), the Bills acquired a 2025 second-round pick from Houston.

The Texans, who made the playoffs in 2023 and are considered legitimate Super Bowl contenders for 2024, benefited from the trade. It’s evident that the Bills were willing to assist an AFC Super Bowl contender, except for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Diggs’ Future Might be with Chiefs in 2025

Trading Diggs to a contender came at a cost for the Bills, as they will incur a substantial $31 million dead cap hit on his contract. This demonstrates the extent of their eagerness to part ways with him.

For Diggs, although the Bills were adamant about not trading him to Kansas City, there’s still a possibility he could join the Chiefs in 2025. Following the revised contract he signed with the Texans on Thursday, the final three years of his deal will be voided, making him a free agent after the 2024 season. If Diggs opts to sign with the Chiefs, he could do so as early as next March.
