The Calgary Flames have revoked their rights to draft pick Topi Ronni on Tuesday following his sentencing in Finland for a rape that occurred when he was a minor.

Ronni, 19, received a one-year suspended prison sentence from the District Court of Helsinki, as announced by his Finnish Elite League team, Tappara Tampere. The team further disclosed the termination of Ronni’s contract in response to the legal decision.

The Flames, who selected Ronni 59th overall in the 2022 NHL draft, subsequently announced his removal from their roster.

Ronni issued an apology via a statement published on Tappara Tampere’s website.

The charges against Ronni were initiated in October, prompting his Finnish team to declare his withdrawal from team activities during the investigative process.

The incident in question took place in 2021, with specific details of the allegations against Ronni remaining undisclosed due to the sealing of case documents.
