In the sixth episode of season 13 of Call the Midwife, Rosalind and Joyce have their final exams, while Matthew receives heartbreaking news. When Matthew eventually opens up to Trixie about his financial difficulties, things get complicated. Meanwhile, two little boys are left at a church by their needy mother.

Will anyone, though, be able to find her? Nancy requests time off from her rota in the sixth episode of season 13 to attend a meeting of Raise The Roof, a movement for increased compensation for nurses.

Sister Julienne notes that Phyllis is the one who sorts the rota, and Nancy is hesitant to ask her because she believes Nurse Crane and she have different political agendas when it comes to advocating for wage increases. Rosalind is apprehensive about her impending final examinations and gets so worked up that she accidentally spills her coffee during breakfast.

But exams and campaigns soon take precedence over everyone’s thoughts when two little boys are discovered abandoned in a church, allegedly by their mother. While Cyril, in his new position as welfare officer, and Sister Veronica call the police, Shelagh assists in looking after the lads.

Call the Midwife Season 13 Episode 6 Recap

When Dr Turner examines the boys, he finds that despite having scabies and nits, they are healthy and appear to be well-fed. As the authorities look for their mother, they are soon placed with a temporary foster mother.

In another scene, Nurse Crane is assisting Gladys Bell, a resident of Poplar, as her ageing father nears the end of his life. She handles his death with great matter-of-factness, packing up his stuff and leaving to go to work as a debt collector. She is experiencing significant stomach problems and isn’t in the best of condition herself.

After examining her, Dr. Turner promptly refers her to a specialist. Gladys tells them she doesn’t have time to be sick because she is irritated. In the meantime, Matthew receives a frantic phone from his mother informing him that he needs to be at the Aylward Estate board meeting later.

The meeting isn’t going well, but Trixie, who isn’t aware of it, is more concerned about picking up her new car later that day and makes Matthew promise to be there since she wants him to be her first passenger. Matthew has been keeping serious financial concerns from Trixie hidden.

Matthew is informed during the meeting that the company is in serious financial trouble and has more debt than he had anticipated, totalling over £250,000.  Matthew’s mother, who is also on the board, informs him that in addition to being immediately removed from the board, his pay from the estate will also cease. Matthew claims he did everything he could with the firm after receiving it from his father.

Trixie goes home after Matthew fails to show up at the car dealership and angrily confronts her husband, claiming they don’t have any documentation of her car being ordered.

He is compelled to acknowledge that he has been fired from his position and removed from the board. He also admits that there was never a car since there was a payment issue when he went to order it.
