The crime anthology series True Detective: Night Country has received a fifth season, which bodes well for the franchise’s future despite its divided reception.

A fifth season of the crime drama True Detective: Night Country could make up for the disappointments of its previous installments, given the conflicting reviews the series received after its finale.

There is more pressure on the upcoming True Detective season 5 to be nothing less than exceptional, as demonstrated by the fact that True Detective: Night Country’s second season fell short of the expectations set by both season 3 and, to a greater extent, season 1.

Issa Lopez Should Get the Opportunity To Star in True Detective Season 5

But in part, the success of True Detective’s third season can be attributed to the fact that showrunner and creator Nic Pizzolatto was given the opportunity to reorient the franchise years after the negative reception of the second season had subsided.

A lot of the problems that led to the mixed reviews of the fourth season of True Detective could be fixed, if not improved upon, now that season 5 has been confirmed and Issa Lopez is expected to return as the showrunner.

Given that Pizzolatto was able to return to the third season of True Detective following the appalling second season, it makes sense for Lopez to return as the showrunner for the upcoming fifth season.

Furthermore, Pizzolatto wrote all of the episodes for the second season, and judging from how well they performed, it’s possible that he shouldn’t have contributed as much to season 3.

Even though he wasn’t the only creative force behind season 3, his diminished involvement made the season better, which is another reason why López deserves a second opportunity.

True Detective: Night Country has story holes, but despite this, critics and viewers have generally praised the show, and its large viewership indicates that López produced an objectively good program. Still, there is a lot that True Detective season 5 could take away from the critiques of season 4.

One of the reasons why True Detective season 1 is still held in such high regard ten years after its conclusion is because of its well-written characters, philosophical musings about morality, and the strong performances of its actors, most notably Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.

While True Detective: Night Country boasts an impressive atmosphere courtesy of its Ennis, Alaska setting and excellent homages to horror movie classics like The ThingTrue Detective: Night Country‘s ending remains one of the most divisive in TV history.

The conclusion does a good job of explaining why the women of Ennis decided to handle things on their own when one of their own members died, but the suspense and build-up surrounding it suggested that the story would work much better.

The idea of women supporting one another and opposing oppressive forces is powerful enough to ground a story, but in the end, the whodunit format of the show doesn’t mesh as well with this theme.

The first and third seasons of True Detective are compelling despite dealing with difficult subjects. There’s still time to polish the plot as season 5 is currently in development.
