The signing of former No. 2 overall pick defensive end Chase Young by the New Orleans Saints to a one-year deal worth up to $13 million has brought attention to a previously undisclosed neck issue. Reports indicate that Young is undergoing a procedure on his neck that will keep him sidelined into training camp, but he is expected to be ready for the upcoming season.

Despite this concern, the Saints felt confident in signing Young.

The discovery of Young’s neck issue reportedly occurred after he experienced a stinger during a preseason game against the Cleveland Browns last year. Although he only missed the regular-season opener, subsequent scans on his neck made it challenging for him to find a team willing to sign him.

Several teams were hesitant to clear Young on his physical due to the neck condition. This issue also impacted Young’s trade market last October, with some teams expressing discomfort with his scans.

Ultimately, the San Francisco 49ers were willing to take on the risk, acquiring Young from the Washington Commanders in exchange for a compensatory third-round pick. Despite the concerns surrounding his neck, Young’s talent and potential as a former NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year have made him a sought-after player in the league.

Young’s contract lacks an injury waiver concerning his pre-existing neck injury. Contrary to previous reports, the guaranteed amount is $5.01 million, not $13 million. Most of the money is structured in per-game roster bonuses.

These per-game roster bonuses are contingent solely on Young being active, per Anderson. His estimated recovery timeline is approximately 3-4 months. The contract’s design aims to provide Young with an opportunity to earn money by remaining active.

Before being traded, Young appeared to be regaining form with Washington in 2023, tallying 15 combined tackles, five sacks, and nine quarterback hits in seven games. Following his move to the 49ers, he played nine games, registering 10 combined tackles, 2.5 sacks, and six quarterback hits. In the playoffs, he recorded 11 combined tackles and one sack in the Super Bowl LVIII defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs.
