Elmira Dergousova celebrated her fifth birthday amid the chaos of Russian tanks entering Ukraine. With a plastic crown atop her head, she blew out candles, but fear lingered as shells landed. Life for Kharkiv’s children drastically changed since then. Daily Russian strikes made traditional schooling too risky, prompting innovative solutions. Now, underground schools in subway tunnels offer safety and a semblance of normalcy.

In cozy classrooms adorned with cartoons, children like Elmira find refuge. Despite the resilience of these underground schools, the specter of war looms. Air raid sirens are a frequent reminder of danger. Mayor Ihor Terekhov acknowledges the impossibility of timely alerts against Russian missiles.

Yet, hope persists. A purpose-built underground school, set to open soon, promises a safer haven for 450 students. With meticulous planning, it aims to recreate a nurturing environment despite the circumstances.

For educators like Olena Rudakova, the focus is on resilience and normalcy. The play remains central to the curriculum, offering solace amidst uncertainty. Rudakova navigates delicate topics with care, mindful of her students’ traumas.

Despite challenges, education remains a beacon of hope. Children yearn for peace and a return to their old schools, where play areas and sports halls await. Rudakova observes their resilience, noting how they’ve grown amid adversity.

As war rages on, the importance of education cannot be overstated. While the underground schools offer safety, they’re a reminder of the conflict’s toll on Ukraine’s children. Yet, amidst the chaos, these young learners continue to seek solace and normalcy in their classrooms.

Tanishq Pitts: Love watching and writing about my favorite TV shows and movies, which makes this the perfect job for me. Prefer TV shows over movies, there is nothing better than getting emotionally invested in a long Tv show and its characters. Favorite genres include sitcoms, fantasy, and horror. Favorite TV shows include Friends, The Office, Parks and Rec, New Girl, Brooklyn 99, The Vampire Diaries, Nancy Drew, and The Haunting Of Hill House. Highly recommend all of these.
