Poland’s President Andrzej Duda faced criticism for expressing uncertainty about Ukraine’s ability to regain control over Russian-occupied Crimea. Despite reaffirming support for Ukraine, Duda’s remarks sparked controversy and internal disagreements within Poland’s ruling coalition.

In an interview on the YouTube channel Kanal Zero, Duda, a supporter of Ukraine since Russia’s 2022 invasion, admitted, “It is hard for me to answer that question” regarding Crimea’s return.

While reiterating the importance of Ukraine regaining Donetsk and Luhansk, Duda considered Crimea historically significant, acknowledging its past association with Russia. The comments drew ire, especially from Poland’s pro-European ruling coalition, highlighting divisions within the country’s political landscape. The Civic Coalition (KO), part of the coalition, criticized Duda’s stance, emphasizing the historical complexities of territorial claims.

Amid the internal disagreements, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Zvarych, affirmed that “Crimea is Ukraine: it is and will remain so.” Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, part of the pro-European coalition, clarified that Warsaw recognizes Ukraine’s independence within internationally established borders.

President Duda sought to defuse the situation, posting on X that his “actions and position on Russia’s brutal aggression against Ukraine have been and are clear from day one.” Emphasizing unity against Russian aggression, Duda reinforced his commitment to a free, sovereign, and independent Ukraine.

Despite the internal disputes, Poland reiterated its steadfast support for Ukraine, underscoring the need for a united front against Russia’s actions. The controversy highlighted the challenges within the political landscape, reflecting differing perspectives on historical and geopolitical issues.
