Last season, the New York Giants experienced a significant regression offensively. Despite Daniel Jones showing promising progress in the first year under Brian Daboll’s coaching, the team encountered numerous challenges in 2023, including a struggling offensive line, injuries to key players like Jones and tight end Darren Waller, and inconsistency despite offseason efforts to upgrade their offensive arsenal.

Looking ahead to Year 3, Daboll is contemplating assuming play-calling duties, a responsibility that has thus far belonged to offensive coordinator Mike Kafka.

“It’s something I’m considering,” Daboll stated via the team’s official website. “At this point in the league, there are around 20 head coaches who call plays, either offensively or defensively. I’ve been conducting research on this matter, but no final decision has been made. I’m still evaluating what needs to be done.”

Several head coaches across the league currently handle play-calling duties, including established names like Andy Reid, Sean McDermott, Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, and others. Additionally, new coaches entering the league could potentially join this group, highlighting the prevalence of coaches who take an active role in play-calling within their respective teams.

Daboll, of course, boasts extensive experience as a play-caller, having served as the offensive coordinator for various teams including the Browns, Dolphins, Chiefs, Alabama, and the Bills at different points in his career.

“I’ve been in that role for quite some time,” Daboll remarked. “There are numerous factors to consider. As part of my evaluation process, I’m exploring various aspects. I’m taking my time to determine what’s best for the team.”

Daboll stressed that he has not yet reached a definitive decision regarding whether he’ll assume the play-calling duties. However, it’s not uncommon for a head coach entering their third year to consider taking on more responsibility, particularly following a disappointing season.

Additionally, with the possibility of the Giants acquiring a new quarterback this season, either through a trade or the No. 6 pick, Daboll may see an opportunity for a fresh start both under center and on the sidelines.
