Daniel Radcliffe Reflects on First Meeting with Maggie Smith, Honoring Her Legacy After Her Passing at 89

Daniel Radcliffe fondly recounted his first meeting with Maggie Smith, who passed away on September 27 at age 89. They met while filming the 1999 BBC drama David Copperfield when Radcliffe was just 9 years old.

Although he didn’t know much about her at the time, Radcliffe was aware of her legendary status, especially through his parents’ awe. Unsure how to address her, Radcliffe asked if he should call her “Dame,” to which Smith humorously dismissed the formality, immediately easing his nerves.

Radcliffe went on to describe Smith’s warmth and charm during their time on David Copperfield, noting how she made him feel comfortable despite his initial anxiety. He was fortunate to later work with her in the Harry Potter films, where she portrayed Professor McGonagall.

Over the course of a decade, Radcliffe admired her sharp intellect, quick wit, and ability to switch between charm and intimidation effortlessly. Her humor and unique presence made her unforgettable on set.

Looking back, Radcliffe felt incredibly fortunate to have shared multiple projects with Smith. He emphasized that the term “legend” was often thrown around, but in her case, it was entirely deserved. Smith’s influence in the film industry was unmatched, and Radcliffe acknowledged the significant impact she had on his career and the careers of many others who had the privilege to work with her.

The news of Maggie Smith’s passing also brought tributes from her Downton Abbey costars, who echoed similar sentiments about her incredible talent and presence. Hugh Bonneville, who played her son in the series, reflected on her sharp wit and immense skill, calling her a true legend of her time. He, like Radcliffe, felt honored to have worked with such an iconic figure.

Michelle Dockery, who played Smith’s granddaughter in Downton Abbey, shared her deep respect and admiration for the late actress, calling her a “maverick.” Dockery expressed her gratitude for knowing Smith and lamented her passing, adding that her thoughts were with Smith’s family during this difficult time. Smith’s extraordinary contributions to the world of entertainment have left a lasting legacy.
