The Cordays and Bell made the show about a family of doctors, including one who worked in a mental hospital, combining the “hospital soap” concept with the custom of basing a series around a family.

The show’s plots revolve around the lives of middle-class and upper-class professionals in Salem, a town in middle America. They include the typical themes of love, marriage, divorce, and family life, as well as character studies of people with psychological issues and medical storylines.

Al Rabin, a former executive producer, praised the characters’ fervor and said they weren’t afraid to “share what’s in their gut.” Days of Our Lives was centered around the tragedies and victories of the suburban Horton family when it first aired in 1965.

More families were added to the show over time in order to interact with the Hortons and provide a basis for more dramatic plots. The Horton family, which was initially headed by patriarch Dr. Tom Horton and his homemaker wife Alice, is still a significant character in the current continuity.

When Laura confides in Dr. Tom, her father-in-law, they both decide that Laura’s husband Mickey shouldn’t be made aware of it.
