After last week’s extraordinarily intimate investigation into the attempted murder of Commissioner Selwyn Patterson—who, fortunately, survived to fight crime another day—the squad is back to business as usual in Death in Paradise season 13 episode 2. That’s not exactly the end of the tale, though, since the Commissioner finds it difficult to acknowledge that he needs more time to heal from his wounds.

While nearly every suspect in the case is busy playing bingo, Nancy Martin, a wealthy philanthropist living in a Saint Marie care facility, is stabbed to death with one of her own knitting needles. This presents a peculiar case for the rest of the team to solve. Who could have had the means and opportunity to kill Nancy Martin? Continue reading to learn more…

Recap

The episode begins with Nancy Martin (Hayley Mills), who has just recently been reunited with her long-lost cousin Eloise Mirie (Juliet Cowan), giving her a tour of the Paradise Bay care facility. Nancy’s archenemy Barbara Mitchell (Ellie Haddington) interrupts the tour, and the two engage in a very acerbic conversation before going to the activity room to play bingo.

Despite her lack of bingo experience, Eloise is receiving a crash course from bingo aficionado Nancy, who also manages to knit while using her dabber to mark off cards. Barbara tells Eloise that although Nancy appears kind and innocent, there is a nasty person hiding behind her façade, explaining why Nancy has an almost perfect record at bingo.

Darlene has discovered the murder weapon during her investigation of the scene: a knitting needle that has been cleaned but still has noticeable blood stains on it. Naomi discovers money in Nancy’s purse, indicating that the murderer wasn’t motivated by money.

Neville observes that Nancy’s old watch has stopped. Neville discovers a curious object in Nancy’s pocket: a copy of a CCTV still with the words “Jeremy Heston, Gatwick, July 23rd 1993” inscribed on the reverse. Except for the murderer, Neville assumes, Darlene tells them that every resident of the assisted living facility was present in the activities room when Nancy was killed.

The following day, Naomi gives Neville an update on what they currently know about Nancy: she left the UK in 1994 and founded a foundation that has given millions of pounds to impoverished children, most of which came from Nancy’s own money. However, not much is known about her life prior to her arrival at Saint Marie.

Her investigation did turn up one interesting detail: Phillipe served as Nancy’s personal assistant for 25 years before retiring to take a position at the Paradise Bay. Additionally, Nancy’s phone is still missing, and she has no way of getting in touch with Jeremy Heston.

Following the case, Selwyn’s daughter Andrina (Genesis Lynea) surprises him when the squad is enjoying a drink at Catherine’s pub. She came to Saint Marie after receiving a call from Catherine to make sure he was okay. Quite frankly, we doubt anyone can convince Selwyn to take his recuperation seriously if Andrina is unable to.
