Ncuti Gatwa joins Doctor Who as the latest addition to the cast, signaling a rejuvenation for the series. BBC and Disney+ announced Millie Gibson’s casting as Gatwa’s sidekick, Ruby Sunday, adding further anticipation to the upcoming season.

His casting in 2022 came ahead of Jodie Whittaker’s departure, with Russell T. Davies returning as showrunner for the 60th-anniversary specials.

Davies expressed his excitement about Gatwa’s role, praising his instant grasp of the character and enthusiasm for the TARDIS keys. A recent trailer teases plenty of adventure and humor, along with hints of impending danger as the Doctor faces a threat to someone dear to him.

Gatwa shared his mixed emotions about the role, feeling deeply honored, immensely excited, and a tad apprehensive.

He acknowledges the significance of the character and the show globally and pledges to approach the responsibility with utmost care, following the footsteps of his talented predecessors.

Indira Varma (Credits: People)

Indira Varma, known for her role in Game of Thrones, is set to portray The Duchess in Doctor Who. While it remains uncertain if her character is connected to Suzie Costello from the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood, which Varma previously portrayed in 2008, she expressed her excitement about joining the Doctor Who universe.

“I’m thrilled to be in Doctor Who and particularly excited to be crossing cosmic paths with Ncuti, as the Doctor, and look forward to creating interplanetary mischief with him,” Varma stated in a May 2023 announcement.
