Akil Thomas’ basket at 5:50 of the first quarter gave the Kings an early lead in the contest. But the Ducks rallied fast, as at 17:46, Frank Vatrano tied the game at one. With his 33rd goal of the year, Vatrano showed that Anaheim was determined to fight back and take the lead.
Alex Killorn nearly missed a goal opportunity in the second period as Anaheim kept up their pressure, and at 1:22 in the third, he finally found the back of the net. Only 29 seconds had passed since a goal was disallowed when Killorn’s score turned the tide in the Ducks’ favor.
At 5:50 of the third, Trevor Zegras increased Anaheim’s lead to 3-1, demonstrating his skill and perseverance in spite of facing adversity. Zegras, playing in his eighth game after recovering from a broken ankle, demonstrated his determination and talent with a well-executed wrist shot.
The Kings gave it their all in an attempt to advance to the playoffs, but they were not able to defeat the tenacious Ducks. “It is never easy in the National Hockey League,” said Jim Hiller, the interim coach of Los Angeles, in reference to the difficulties of playing in the league.
