Denis Villeneuve is crafting the next chapter of Dune with a fresh perspective. In the upcoming Dune: Part Three, the spotlight will shine on Chani, played by Zendaya. Rather than being Paul’s unwavering supporter, she stands beside him as an equal. This shift alters the story’s conclusion significantly.

Villeneuve shared with The New York Times his excitement about the direction he’s taking. The emotional intensity at the end of Part Two, especially from Zendaya’s character, provides ample material for the next film.

While he’s tight-lipped about specific plot details, Villeneuve is confident about his creative choices. Chani’s departure at the end of Part Two isn’t just due to Paul’s political marriage to Princess Irulan. It’s also because Paul breaks promises he made to her.

What to Expect From Dune 3?

His transformation after consuming the Water of Life changes him fundamentally, causing a rift between them. This divergence from the book’s narrative raises questions about the future of Paul Atreides’s story.

The third installment will draw inspiration from Herbert’s Dune Messiah, portraying the House of Atreides twelve years after Paul becomes Emperor. Despite his power, Paul finds himself unable to halt the spread of a galaxy-wide war.

His relationship with Chani is strained, adding complexity to the upcoming film. Villeneuve’s decision to deviate from Herbert’s original plot isn’t seen as sacrilege but as an enhancement.

By centering female characters like Chani, the narrative highlights the pitfalls of unchecked power. Villeneuve aims to honor Herbert’s vision by focusing on Chani’s pivotal role in the unfolding saga.

As Dune 3 is in its early stages, fans can revisit or discover Dune: Part Two through digital platforms, anticipating the new direction the story will take.
