Ari Aster started his directing career with the horror film Hereditary in 2018, starring Toni Collette as a mom dealing with a tragic loss. The movie made over $80 million on a $10 million budget, making it A24’s top-earning film until 2022.

His next movie, Midsommar, came out in 2019. It’s a folk horror story about a group of friends visiting a rare Swedish festival. Despite dividing opinions, it earned $48 million worldwide and was mostly liked by audiences.

In 2021, Aster announced his third film, Beau Is Afraid, initially named Disappointment Blvd. Fans expected another scary movie, especially with Joaquin Phoenix on board. However, Aster surprised everyone with a dark comedy instead of horror.

The film got mixed reviews and earned only $11.5 million, making it a $35 million loss for A24, their most expensive movie at that time. Now, everyone’s eagerly waiting for Aster’s fourth movie, Eddington. This article will share all we know about it so far.

Release Date

Sadly, Ari Aster and A24 haven’t announced the release date for Eddington yet. Filming started on March 11, 2024, in New Mexico and will wrap up on May 17. After that, they’ll work on editing and finishing touches. Based on Aster’s past films, we might see “Eddington” hit theaters in early 2025.

Plot

The plot of Eddington is mostly a secret, but we know it’s about a small-town sheriff in New Mexico with big dreams. However, a Reddit AMA with director Ari Aster from four years ago gave some hints about the movie.

Aster mentioned that he once considered making Midsommar or another script called Eddington as his first film. He described Eddington as a mix of Western and film noir, set in modern times but with a strong Western and noir feel.

Aster, who grew up in New Mexico, had the Eddington script ready when he made Hereditary. He revealed in the AMA that Eddington is set in a made-up copper mining town in New Mexico during a pandemic.

There’s a rumor that the film follows a couple named Lindsay and Marc driving to Los Angeles. They run out of gas near Eddington and seek help in the town. Initially welcomed warmly, their visit takes a dark turn as night falls.
