Kris Knoblauch was somewhat aback by how soon the Edmonton Oilers qualified for the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, given their starting standing when he took over as head coach.

After head coach Jay Woodcroft and assistant Dave Manson were fired and Knoblauch was hired, Edmonton was left in a difficult situation—tied for last in the standings overall. But with perseverance and diligence, the group accomplished an incredible recovery.

Oilers secure a playoff spot

With seven games remaining in the regular season, the Oilers guaranteed a postseason berth by defeating the Colorado Avalanche 6-2 at Rogers Place. Knoblauch disclosed that the squad had established certain objectives from the start, hoping to maintain a winning record over eight games in order to guarantee a postseason berth.

The Oilers had a 3-9-1 record at the beginning of the season, but under Knoblauch’s direction they turned things around and now have a 43-15-4 record.

They went from being 10 points out of contention to becoming the 20th team in NHL history and the 12th in the last 30 years to qualify for the playoffs thanks to their incredible turnaround.

A remarkable 16-game victory streak from December to January—nearly matching the NHL record—was the high point of the Oilers’ comeback. The team’s confidence in their ability to turn things around and ultimately secure a postseason position was highlighted by forward Evander Kane.

With the playoffs approaching, the Oilers are motivated to continue their winning ways and leave a lasting impression.

The team’s resilience and spirit are crucial, according to forward Leon Draisaitl, who also acknowledged that making the playoffs is only the first step toward their ultimate objective of winning the Stanley Cup.

The Oilers encountered difficulties early in the season, despite early predictions that they would be contenders. But making the playoffs has proven they are still capable. Mattias Ekholm, a defenseman, highlighted the value of playoff experience, saying that this season’s Oilers are more prepared for victory.

The Oilers are focused on sustaining their momentum and getting ready for a deep playoff run as the regular season comes to an end. With the Stanley Cup in their sights, they are determined to make the most of their hard-earned postseason opportunity.
