Ella Purnell Shares How Gaming Helped Shape Her Role in Fallout

Ella Purnell has won praise for her role as Lucy MacLean in Prime Video’s ‘Fallout,’ based on the popular Bethesda RPG video game. With the show renewed for a second season, much credit goes to Purnell’s excellent performance as Lucy.

Before the show’s premiere, Purnell spoke on Ladies Night with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff about preparing for her role. Nemiroff asked if Purnell created any backstory for Lucy that wasn’t shown in the series but influenced her portrayal.

Purnell shared that immersing herself in the game helped her understand Lucy’s world, a post-apocalyptic setting after a nuclear war. She even made playlists and imagined Lucy’s personal preferences to develop her character.

While many advised her not to play the game for her role, Purnell chose to do so. She wanted to fully grasp the significance of the world she was portraying. She cherished the moment of trying on Lucy’s vault suit, recognizing the honor it was to play such a role.

Purnell went deeper into her gaming experience, discussing a pivotal moment for Lucy. Lucy had to decide whether to upgrade her tranquilizer gun, echoing the game’s theme of choices shaping character development.
