A senior ABC executive discusses the potential for further Grey’s Anatomy spinoffs. Station 19, a spinoff for firefighters, and Private Practice have previously been introduced by the medical drama.

The former’s impending termination with the forthcoming season 7 was announced in December 2023, and its impending absence has raised concerns over whether other Grey’s Anatomy spinoffs will occur.

ABC’s chief executive Craig Erwich was questioned by Deadline on the popular medical soap opera’s future beyond the current season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy. In the quote below, Erwich says he’s willing to expand the world, but he also says he’s not in a rush to divert attention from the main event:

Grey’s is one of our most realized series and one of the brands we’re always open to new and varied variations on. I need to divide up some of the excellent items I have here.

Why A Grey’s Anatomy Spinoff Could Work?

Given its length, Grey’s Anatomy is in a stronger position to start a spinoff set in a hospital. With several prominent cast members leaving the show and series star Ellen Pompeo’s position being reduced, the ABC drama already has two essential components for a spinoff: seasoned actors that the public knows and can relate to, and fresh faces that work alongside the seasoned talent.

After setting up the scene, Grey’s Anatomy season 19 he welcomed a fresh group of interns. The cast was expanded to include Niko Terho, Adelaide Kane, Midori Francis, Harry Shum Jr., and Alexis Floyd. Floyd portrays the accomplished Simone Griffin, a Seattle native with a traumatic past with the hospital.

Daniel “Blue” Kwan, portrayed by Shum, is an irritable, kind but extremely competitive resident. Kane plays Jules Millin, a character who feels burdened by being the sole adult in her family, while Francis plays Mika Yasuda, the middle child of eight siblings who is used to being ignored.

Terho, on the other hand, portrays the driven Lucas Adams. A Grey’s Anatomy spinoff might centre on any one of these characters or all of them. One of television’s most significant triumphs is Grey’s Anatomy. It is popular on streaming services, does well in broadcast ratings, and is well-liked by viewers outside of the US.

It checks many boxes, so it’s unlikely that the new interns will take the lead on their spinoff very soon. But the pieces are already in place for a continuation when the time comes for the long-running to give up.
