Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” is situated within the same universe as the 2019 film, both directed by Guy Ritchie. James confirmed to Netflix that while “The Gentlemen” draws inspiration from the movie, its storyline diverges significantly.

The 2019 film features Matthew McConaughey as Mickey Pearson, an American expatriate who amasses wealth through a lucrative marijuana enterprise in London.

Upon deciding to sell his business, a cascade of schemes unfolds, involving bribery, blackmail, and the machinations of various underworld figures.

Alongside McConaughey, Colin Farrell, Hugh Grant, Jeremy Strong, Michelle Dockery, and Charlie Hunnam contribute to the comedy-thriller’s ensemble cast.

“The Gentlemen” raked in $115 million worldwide at the box office, as reported by Box Office Mojo. Two years later, Miramax announced a spin-off TV series, with Guy Ritchie returning as an executive producer and co-writer.

The decision was spurred by the film’s popularity on Netflix, leading the streamer to greenlight the show, as per MovieWeb’s November 2022 report.

Notably, none of the original movie’s stars reprised their roles for the Netflix series, and prior familiarity with the film is not necessary for viewers.

Ritchie elucidated his motivations for expanding “The Gentlemen” universe to Netflix, expressing his desire to explore further narrative avenues. He remarked,

“I felt within The Gentlemen I could have at least continued with another film… The ability to be able to extend storylines has been tremendously liberating.”
