The renowned TV chef Dave Myers, widely recognized as one-half of the Hairy Bikers, has succumbed to cancer at the age of 66, as confirmed by his co-star, Si King.

Dave Myers gained prominence alongside King, his close companion for three decades, as they formed the dynamic cooking duo known for their motorcycle adventures.

In 2013, Myers captivated a broader audience when he participated in Strictly Come Dancing, and partnered with Karen Hauer, showcasing his talent until week seven of the BBC competition.

In a heartfelt statement, King expressed,

“I’m saddened to share the news. Many of you are aware that Dave valiantly battled cancer over the past couple of years. On the evening of February 28, 2024, surrounded by his beloved wife Lili, family, dear friend David, and myself, Dave peacefully departed at his home.”

“All who knew Dave are devastated at his passing. His beloved wife brought him such happiness as did her children, Iza and Sergiu, whom Dave loved like his own.

“Personally, I am not sure I can put into words how I feel at the moment. My best friend is on a journey that for now I can’t follow. I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime. I wish you god’s speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world. See you on the other side. Love ya.”

Myers, a native of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, disclosed in May 2022 that he was undergoing treatment for cancer. However, he opted not to divulge the specific type of cancer he was battling.

In an interview, he explained,

“Because everybody then goes Googling, everybody becomes an amateur doctor … And I don’t want to be judged.”

The latest BBC Two series featuring the presenters, titled “The Hairy Bikers Go West,” premiered earlier this month. This captivating show follows their journey along the west coast of Britain, spanning from Scotland to Devon. Notably, this series marks their first project since Myers’ cancer diagnosis and has been lauded as “magical.”

“There was a time I couldn’t balance, I couldn’t walk, I didn’t think I’d be getting on a bike,” he said.

Many Personalities Paid Tribute

Saturday Kitchen host Matt Tebbutt posted on Instagram that Myers was:

“One of the good guys, seriously funny, genuinely nice, and always a joy to have him and Si on the show.”

BBC Morning Live presenter Gethin Jones commented on air that:

“We’ve met the guy so many times. It’s so sad – he was so lovely and smiley.” His co-host Kym Marsh added: “He was such a gorgeous human being.”

Myers embarked on his career as a makeup artist and crossed paths with King in 1995 while collaborating on the TV drama “The Gambling Man.”

Their initial joint venture on screen occurred in 2004 with “The Hairy Bikers’ Cookbook,” blending elements of cooking and travel as they traversed the length of Portugal in the debut episode.

Subsequently, they produced numerous follow-up series and authored over 25 cookery books, including the weight-loss guide “Hairy Dieters: How To Love Food and Lose Weight,” along with the accompanying lifestyle plan, the “Hairy Bikers Diet Club.”

Expressing gratitude, King acknowledged the support from fans during recent times and urged for space and time for Myers’ family and close friends to grieve the loss.

“I know Dave and his family would want me to thank all of you who sent messages of support in recent times. It meant the world to him, his family, and the Hairy Bikers team. I am sending you all much love and gratitude for those simple acts of kindness, generosity, and spirit. We are eternally grateful for them,” he wrote.

“May I ask you all for one further kindness and allow Lili, his wife, his family, close friends, and I some time and some peace to process our huge loss. I am sure I will see you all soon.”
