Flo Milli Shines in NPR's Tiny Desk Debut, Celebrating Black Music Month with Dynamic Performance

Flo Milli recently debuted on NPR’s Tiny Desk alongside Atlanta’s Band of Brothers musicians, marking Black Music Month with a captivating performance. She presented tracks from her growing discography, showcasing her trademark confidence and charisma. Starting strong with hits like “Conceited,” “Bed Time,” and the viral sensation “Beef FloMix,” Flo Milli nostalgically recalled its origins, written at 18 in her mother’s house.

The performance went beyond a simple rendition of familiar songs; Flo Milli introduced fresh interpretations, including a surprising acoustic version of “Never Lose Me” featuring an unreleased verse. This stripped-down rendition offered a more introspective view, enriching her musical repertoire. Throughout the set, her backup singers, the Floettes, provided seamless harmonies that elevated the live experience.

NPR’s Tiny Desk has been honoring Black Music Month with a focus on female artists, with Flo Milli joining a prestigious lineup that includes Brittney Spencer, Tierra Whack, Tems, and Chaka Khan. Bobby Carter, host, and producer for Tiny Desk, emphasized the importance of spotlighting women in this year’s celebration, noting his intention to showcase the diverse contributions of female musicians to Black music history.

Carter’s initiative stemmed from a desire to balance representation after noticing a predominance of male performers in previous editions.

This year’s decision to feature exclusively women-led performances reflects NPR’s commitment to honoring the pivotal role that women have played in shaping the landscape of Black music. Flo Milli’s Tiny Desk debut not only affirmed her rising star status but also contributed to a broader narrative of recognition and celebration within the music industry.
