Funimation Finally Shuts Down After 30 Years of Service

Funimation

In recent times, it’s nearly impossible to fathom a world devoid of anime. Whether in Japan or the United States, the medium holds a firm grip on fans worldwide. Once considered niche, anime has transcended those boundaries long ago.

The advent of streaming revolutionized how anime is consumed globally, with platforms like Funimation leading the charge. Now, after three decades of service, Funimation bids adieu, leaving behind an indelible legacy.

The final curtain fell on Funimation’s operations on April 1st, catching some by surprise who hoped it was merely a prank. Alas, Funimation has closed its doors.

From its app to its website, Funimation, once a titan in anime entertainment, is no more. Most of its operations have been assimilated into Crunchyroll, as promised, yet the farewell to Funimation will take time to sink in.

As depicted in the slides below, Funimation has become a hot topic among anime enthusiasts. Established in 1994, the company played a pivotal role in bringing anime to the forefront decades ago.

From classics like Sailor Moon to juggernauts like Dragon Ball, many of the most beloved anime series in the West owe their popularity to Funimation. It played a significant part in putting anime on the global map, garnering love from millions of fans.

While the service may have ceased, Funimation’s impact will endure. With Sony Entertainment’s acquisition of Funimation some years ago, its operations have merged into Crunchyroll. Reflecting on Funimation’s closure, Crunchyroll expressed gratitude in a statement shared with ComicBook:

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the subscribers and users who supported Funimation over the years. The future looks bright for anime and for Crunchyroll.

As we forge ahead, we eagerly anticipate sharing our love and passion for anime with fans across more countries through various mediums – streaming, films, collectibles, merchandise, events, games, and more. There has never been a better time to be an anime fan!”

For now, internet users will observe how Funimation’s legacy evolves as anime continues to thrive globally. It laid the groundwork for the industry we cherish today, and for that, Funimation deserves endless gratitude.
