According to data from the Box Office Mojo website, the sequel to the film Godzilla vs. Kong, titled Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, maintained its dominance at the box office in the United States for the second consecutive weekend.

The movie amassed an estimated total of US$31,700,000 in revenue across 3,948 theaters during its second-weekend run. This comprised an estimated US$8,500,000 on Friday, US$13,800,000 on Saturday, and US$9,400,000 on Sunday.

With this performance, the film has now grossed a cumulative total of US$135,037,630 domestically, and an impressive US$361,037,630 worldwide. Deadline’s report on Sunday indicated that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire raked in US$59.3 million from screenings across 69 countries over the weekend. Notably, IMAX showings contributed a substantial US$34 million to the film’s global earnings.

Originally slated for release on April 12, the film debuted in the United States on March 29, two weeks earlier than planned. This rescheduling followed a previous delay from its initial opening date of March 15.

Box Office Success and Upcoming Release in Japan

During preview screenings held on March 28 in approximately 3,400 U.S. locations, the film generated around US$8 million in revenue. This preview performance ranks as the second-highest among “Monsterverse” movies, trailing only the US$9.3 million garnered by 2014’s Godzilla.

In its opening weekend, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire secured the top spot at the U.S. box office with a robust debut of US$80 million. The movie is scheduled to debut in Japan on April 26.

Adam Wingard, known for his work on projects like Death Note, The Guest, and You’re Next, returned to direct the film. Mary Parent, Álex García, Eric McLeod, Thomas Tull, and Jon Jashni served as producers.

The earlier installment in the Godzilla vs. Kong series premiered internationally in March 2021 in regions without access to the HBO Max streaming service. It subsequently premiered in U.S. theaters later that month, where it also claimed the top spot.

To date, Godzilla vs. Kong has earned US$100,916,094 domestically and a total worldwide gross of US$470,116,094. The film finally opened in Japan in July 2021, following a postponement from its original May 2021 release date, and similarly dominated the box office in its debut weekend.
