The Box Office Mojo website estimates that the sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, titled “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” raked in an impressive US$80 million during its opening weekend in the United States. The film dominated the U.S. box office, pulling in an estimated US$37,000,000 on Friday, followed by approximately US$26,600,000 on Saturday, and about US$16,400,000 on Easter Sunday.

Internationally, the movie earned an estimated US$114 million from 63 screenings, with China leading the charge with a staggering US$44 million in opening earnings. This brings the global earnings for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire to an impressive US$194 million. With these figures, the “Monsterverse” series’ cumulative earnings across its five films have now surpassed the US$2 billion mark.

According to Deadline, the film collected approximately US$8 million during its preview screenings on Thursday across roughly 3,400 locations in the U.S. This figure marks the second-best previews for a “Monsterverse” movie, trailing behind 2014’s Godzilla, which earned US$9.3 million in preview screenings.

Originally slated for release on April 12, the film premiered in the United States two weeks earlier than planned. This date change followed a delay from its initial March 15 opening. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire played across 3,861 theaters for its opening weekend, including IMAX and 4DX screenings.

Directed by Adam Wingard, the film’s production was helmed by Mary Parent, Álex García, Eric McLeod, Thomas Tull, and Jon Jashni.

The preceding installment, Godzilla vs. Kong, debuted internationally in March 2021 in territories where the HBO Max streaming service is unavailable. It later premiered in U.S. theaters at the end of the same month, claiming the top spot at the box office. The film has since amassed US$100,916,094 in the United States and a global total of US$470,116,094, as reported by Box Office Mojo.

Godzilla vs. Kong made its debut in Japan in July 2021, following a delay from its original May 2021 release date, and similarly dominated the local box office during its opening weekend.
