Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle Surpasses 6.99 Million Tickets Sold in Japan

The official X account for the two-part Haikyu!! The final sequel film project, the first film, HAIKYU, was announced on Wednesday!! The Dumpster Battle (Gekijōban Haikyu!! Gomi Suteba no Kessen), has achieved remarkable success, selling over 6.99 million tickets for over 10 billion yen (about US$63 million) after 75 days of screening in Japan, as of April 30.

To commemorate this achievement, the film’s staff shared its outdoor advertisement video that was displayed at the 45.6-meter-long Shinjuku Wall 456 near Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station for one week.

The film premiered in Japan on February 16 and is also being screened in IMAX format. Susumu Mitsunaka, known for directing and writing for the Haikyu!! television anime series helmed both the direction and script for the film.

During its initial three days of screening, the film sold 1,529,000 tickets, accumulating 2,230,465,540 yen (about US$14.12 million) in earnings. Notably, it had the highest opening weekend earnings for a film in Japan this year, surpassing the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM anime film.

The North American theatrical release of the film is scheduled for May 31, featuring screenings with Japanese audio and English subtitles, as well as an English dub.

The two films were announced by the anime’s staff in August 2022, with the first film focusing on the “fated showdown” between Karasuno High and Nekoma High.

Haruichi Furudate initiated the original Haikyu!! manga in 2011, concluding its serialization in July 2020. Shueisha released the series’ 45th and final volume in November 2020. Viz Media distributes the manga digitally and in print, simultaneously publishing it digitally alongside its Japanese release. MANGA Plus also offers the manga digitally in English.

The first television anime adaptation by Production I.G premiered in April 2014. Subsequently, the second season aired in October 2015, followed by the third season in October 2016. In the fourth season,

Haikyu!! To The Top debuted in January 2020, with the first half concluding in April 2020 with episode 13. Initially slated for July 2020, the second half’s release was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually airing in October 2020.

The manga’s popularity has led to various adaptations, including stage plays, clay-animated short films, compilation anime films, and several video anime. A new stage play ran from August 19-27.
