Recap

Hardcore Transformers fans had a common complaint when the first live-action film was released: why was the focus of the film more on the human beings than the robots? Gamers were also upset that Halo, a game depicting an all-out war between humans and aliens, turned into a show that hardly ever showed full-on fighting when Halo season 1 debuted on Paramount+.

The explanation is the same in both situations: those who are making it are giving you what they can afford to provide and ingeniously crafting a story around the rest. The robot action in the Transformers films increased with each film, to the point where Mirage might be considered a co-lead in Rise of the Beasts.

Another criticism leveled against the Halo series is that Master Chief takes off his helmet and all of his Spartan armor, but that just highlights a significant storytelling divide between mediums. Master Chief is completely covered in the game, making him an avatar for every player—or at least every male player—if you never see what he looks like, which is a good audience identification tactic.

However, if you’re going to tell a story that depicts anything other than the character in battle, such as him sleeping, receiving medical attention for his wounds, or even taking a shower, it becomes absurd at a certain point to keep him fully clothed and armored all the time.

Bokeem Woodbine, the most well-known member of the ensemble, has the least amount of screen time for a key character but has a significant impact when he does. Unfortunately for us, his storyline finds reasons to keep him offscreen quite a bit in favor of Kwan (Yerin Ha), who just isn’t that compelling when not actively engaged with John.

Soren, a former Spartan turned pirate, sets out to explore reports of Halsey still alive. Again, this is likely due to financial constraints and Woodbine’s request for a higher payment, but Soren’s family is pleasant and boring in comparison to him by story design, so when they are highlighted, the drama is expected and uninteresting.
