In a recent interview, acclaimed actor Henry Cavill, alongside co-star Sam Rockwell, offered insights into the highly anticipated spy action comedy, Argylle, and discussed the potential for sequels.

Despite the confirmation that Argylle is set to kick off a multi-movie series under the direction of Matthew Vaughn, Cavill and Rockwell emphasized their cautious approach, awaiting audience reception before committing to follow-up projects.

While Vaughn previously outlined plans for expanding Argylle into a film trilogy with ties to new books revolving around the titular character, both Cavill and Rockwell clarified that their participation in sequels depends on the film’s performance and fan demand.

Rockwell expressed a desire to observe how the movie fares, stating, “I just want to see how it does.” Cavill echoed this sentiment, asserting that the decision for sequels hinges on whether the audience appreciates their work. He emphasized, “It all depends on whether the audience likes what we’ve done.”

Argylle unfolds the story of Elly Conway, portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard, who becomes entangled in the world of espionage as her spy novels play out in real-time. The narrative involves Conway’s close proximity to an underworld crime syndicate, leading to her rescue by Aidan and encountering Cavill’s eponymous secret agent.

Vaughn designed Argylle with the intention of subverting traditional spy movie tropes while delivering a compelling storyline. With a substantial budget of $200 million, the film is anticipated to break even around the $500 million mark.

Despite a star-studded cast, including Dua Lipa, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, Ariana DeBose, and Catherine O’Hara, early feedback on Argylle has been mixed, with a 35% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, raising concerns about its plot and lengthy runtime of 2 hours and 19 minutes.

Henry Cavill, reflecting on his role as the eponymous secret agent, expressed a desire to create a character distinct from any version of James Bond. For Cavill, this marks his entry into the spy film genre after narrowly missing out on the role of Bond in Casino Royale.

While Cavill remains uncertain about future Bond opportunities, Vaughn acknowledged that elements of Agent Argylle were influenced by the iconic 007 characters. If sequels materialize, Cavill affirmed his readiness to participate, stating, “If Matthew comes calling, I’d certainly say yes.”
