Hulu has greenlit a pilot for a new multi-camera comedy titled Mid-Century Modern, created and written by David Kohan and Max Mutchnick, best known for Will & Grace.

The series, executive produced by Ryan Murphy, has already drawn a star-studded cast, including Matt Bomer, Nathan Lane, and Linda Lavin. Set against the backdrop of Palm Springs, the show revolves around three longtime friends, all gay men entering their golden years, who decide to live together following a sudden loss.

Nathan Lane portrays Bunny Schneiderman, the affluent and perpetually single friend in search of love while struggling with his own self-worth. Linda Lavin plays his mother, Sybil, a character described as both nurturing and overly critical.

Matt Bomer’s character, Jerry Frank, is introduced as a man with a kind heart, strong physique, and a more carefree mentality. The dynamic trio is completed by a yet-to-be-cast third friend and a Gen Z housekeeper who prefers to work in the nude.

The show’s premise, like that of a gender-swapped Golden Girls, emphasizes the chosen family dynamic among the characters as they navigate life’s challenges together. The comedy promises to blend humor with heartfelt moments as these friends support each other through the ups and downs of aging and personal growth.

Matt Bomer, known for his roles in Will & Grace and collaborations with Ryan Murphy on American Horror Story and The Normal Heart, brings a wealth of experience to the project. Similarly, Nathan Lane, recognized for his Emmy-nominated performances in Only Murders in the Building and his upcoming role in Murphy’s Monster, adds his comedic prowess to the ensemble. Linda Lavin, celebrated for her recent work on CBS’ Elsbeth and B Positive, rounds out the seasoned cast.

Produced by 20th Television, Mid-Century Modern is positioned to attract viewers with its blend of seasoned talent, creative pedigree, and a premise that promises both laughs and poignant reflections on life and friendship.

With Murphy and veteran director James Burrows onboard as executive producers, the series looks poised to deliver a fresh and engaging take on aging, friendship, and the unconventional bonds that hold us together.
