International Release Window Revealed for “A Silent Voice Director” Naoko Yamada’s ‘The Colors Within’

In a highly anticipated announcement, film licensors GKIDS, Anime Ltd., and Charades have revealed the international release plans for “The Colors Within,” the latest animated feature from acclaimed director Naoko Yamada.

Scheduled for release in Winter 2024, GKIDS will bring the film to audiences in North America, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand, while Anime Ltd. secures distribution rights for the United Kingdom, Ireland, and all of Europe. Additionally, PLAION PICTURES will handle Italian and German-speaking territories. To ensure comprehensive coverage, GKIDS and Anime LTD have enlisted Charades to manage sales in the remaining European regions, as well as Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand.

“The Colors Within” marks a collaboration between Yamada and popular anime studio Science Saru, known for their innovative and visually striking productions. Producer Genki Kawamura, renowned for his work on acclaimed films like “Your Name.” and “Weathering With You,” is attached to the project for planning and production. The screenplay, penned by Reiko Yoshida of “Violet Evergarden” fame, promises a compelling narrative complemented by a charming score composed by Kensuke Ushio.

The film centers on Totsuko, a high school student with the unique ability to perceive the “colors” of others’ emotions. When she encounters Kimi, a classmate emitting the most beautiful color she has ever seen, Totsuko forms a band with Kimi and Rui, a fellow music enthusiast. Together, they head on a musical journey that leads them to an old church on a remote island, where friendships are forged and affections stirred.
