The Philadelphia Eagles faced challenges towards the end of the 2023 season, coinciding with Jalen Hurts’ struggles as the team’s quarterback. The team experienced a downturn, losing six of their last seven games, prompting scrutiny into Hurts’ performance both on and off the field.

Questions emerged regarding the $255 million quarterback’s role in the Eagles’ decline, especially considering his previous success with a 27-2 record in the 29 games leading up to the losing streak.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie emphasized the importance of authenticity for Hurts moving forward. Lurie expressed a desire for Hurts to remain true to himself, highlighting authenticity as one of Hurts’ key attributes. Lurie believes that trying to be someone else, especially at a young age, can be detrimental, emphasizing Hurts’ authenticity as a positive example.

Hurts struggled with turnovers during the 2023 season, committing a total of 20 turnovers in 17 regular-season games, including 15 interceptions and five lost fumbles. These turnovers had a noticeable impact on his performance, as reflected in his statistics over the final six games of the season, during which he completed 61.1% of his passes for 1,161 yards, five touchdowns, five interceptions, and a passer rating of 77.6.

Despite facing criticism for his leadership and on-field performance, Jalen Hurts remained consistent in his demeanor and approach throughout the season. Owner Jeffrey Lurie pointed out the irony that Hurts’ stoicism was praised when the team was winning but questioned when they faced losses.

Lurie emphasized that the Eagles value Hurts for being himself and want him to continue leading in his own style.

Lurie expressed confidence in Hurts’ ability to navigate the ups and downs of his career, noting that every quarterback experiences similar challenges. Despite the team’s struggles in the latter part of the season, Lurie reiterated his belief in Hurts as an exceptional leader and emphasized the importance of reinforcing his authentic leadership style rather than trying to change him.
