On Friday, Joe Flacco officially joined the Indianapolis Colts. While he is enthusiastic about this new opportunity, Flacco had anticipated staying with the Cleveland Browns after aiding them in securing a playoff berth last season.

During his introductory press conference with the Colts, Flacco admitted feeling “a little surprised” that Cleveland didn’t retain him, as reported by The Athletic. The 39-year-old mentioned that unlike last year, he is pleased to join a team now rather than midseason. He also looks forward to collaborating with Colts’ second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson.

“It’s just about being in the room with him,” Flacco stated. “It’s about bringing experience and helping him simplify things to play fast.”

Despite his brief stint in Cleveland, Flacco made a significant impact. The Browns recently conveyed their gratitude for Flacco’s contributions, as he posted a 4-1 record as the team’s starter in 2023.

Last season, Flacco was inactive until the Browns contacted him due to injuries affecting their quarterback roster. He was added to Cleveland’s practice squad on Nov. 20 and rose to the starting lineup in Week 13. Flacco remained the starter for the rest of the season, playing a pivotal role in the Browns’ playoff qualification.

“Joe, it was one helluva ride,” the Browns expressed on X. “You brought such a sense of joy and genuine excitement to this team game in and game out. We were proud to have you in the orange and brown, and we wish you nothing but the best in Indianapolis.”

It’s evident that both the Browns and Flacco profited from his brief stint in Cleveland. The Browns secured a playoff berth, while Flacco’s performance earned him the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. His contributions last season also paved the way for his current opportunity in Indianapolis.

“I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have been a part of this team,” Flacco reflected shortly after Cleveland’s playoff loss to Houston. “I know many can say the same, but it truly is special. To have had the chance to play alongside these guys, I am immensely grateful.”
