The Motion Picture Association has officially rated “Joker: Folie à Deux” as R. The sequel to the 2019 hit “Joker” stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.

The much awaited sequel has earned its R rating due to “some strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality, and brief full nudity,” mirroring the classification of the original film.

Directed by Todd Phillips, “Joker: Folie à Deux” reunites Phoenix in the titular role alongside Gaga, who portrays his enigmatic companion Harley Quinn. The cast also includes Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener, and Brendan Gleeson.

While specifics about the plot remain guarded, Variety revealed exclusively in March that the film will predominantly be a jukebox musical, incorporating at least 15 reimagined renditions of popular songs.

Among them is “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical “The Band Wagon,” famously performed by Judy Garland. However, a couple of original compositions might also make their way into the soundtrack.

Following its Golden Lion win at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, the original “Joker” soared past $1 billion in global box office revenue and secured 11 nominations at the 2020 Oscars. Phoenix clinched the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker.

Gaga, too, has found success in Hollywood, with acclaimed roles in films like “A Star Is Born” and “House of Gucci.” She earned a Best Actress nomination at the 2019 Oscars for her performance in “A Star Is Born,” while the film’s track “Shallow” won the Best Original Song award.
