Frequently referred to as “La Grande de Sinaloa,” Lola Beltrán, a Mexican actor and singer, would have turned 92 today. Renowned for her mastery of Ranchera and Huapango music, Beltrán produced approximately 100 albums and starred in 50 films during her illustrious career.

Hailing from a working-class background in El Rosario, Sinaloa, in northwestern Mexico, Beltrán initially honed her singing skills in the church choir.

Her professional journey commenced when, at 21, she relocated with her mother to Mexico City. Securing a position as a secretary at a prominent radio station, Beltrán seized the opportunity to participate in an on-air singing competition.

Not only did Beltrán emerge victorious, but her remarkable performance also caught the attention of radio producers who facilitated her acquisition of a recording contract.

From that point onward, her career soared. Beltrán showcased her talent by covering popular songs on air, eventually earning her radio show. Her distinctive and commanding voice left an indelible mark on Mexican culture.

Beltrán’s versatility across multiple Mexican musical genres, including rancheras, boleros, and mariachi, distinguished her in the industry.

One of her standout achievements was her rendition of “Cucurrucucú Paloma,” originally penned by Tomás Méndez. This rendition swiftly became her signature piece, eventually establishing itself as the definitive rendition of the beloved melody.

Throughout her illustrious career, Beltrán achieved milestones such as being the first Ranchera singer to perform at Mexico City’s prestigious El Palacio de Bellas Artes and entertaining esteemed dignitaries worldwide.

Beyond music, Beltrán left her mark on Mexican cinema, starring in numerous films from the 1950s to the 1970s. She shared the screen with iconic figures such as Pedro Infante, Jorge Negrete, and Antonio Aguilar.

Beltrán passed away on March 24, 1996, at the age of 64. Today, on what would have been her 92nd birthday, Google pays tribute to her with a Google Doodle featuring the singer holding a microphone.
