MAPPA Is Now Planning To Venture Into Live-Action Production

MAPPA, known for its acclaimed anime series like Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan, has made an unexpected move by venturing into live-action production. Teaming up with K2 Pictures and other industry veterans, MAPPA aims to invigorate the film sector.

Their collaboration signals a joint effort to support K2 Pictures in crafting a live-action film with global appeal. Founded by film producer Muneyuki Kii, K2 Pictures seeks to rejuvenate Japanese cinema and ensure fair returns for filmmakers.

In a statement, MAPPA expressed its commitment to assist K2 Pictures in its endeavors, highlighting a desire to contribute both as a film production partner and an animation studio. This initiative aligns with MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka’s vision of diversifying the studio’s portfolio beyond animation.

Former MAPPA board member Makoto Kimura shed light on the challenges facing the anime industry, underscoring the need for better financing and profit-sharing mechanisms. Kimura’s new venture, BLUE RIGHTS, aims to address these issues and empower anime creators financially.

The involvement of acclaimed filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda with K2 Pictures underscores a broader push for industry reform. Kore-eda, along with director Takashi Yamazaki, recently advocated for increased investment and fairer profit structures in a meeting with Japan’s Prime Minister.

MAPPA’s foray into live-action production represents a bold step towards reshaping Japan’s film industry and fostering greater collaboration within the industry.
