The third mission in a row for Gale and Bucky’s regiment in the Apple TV+ World War II epic Masters of the Air, “Part Three,” ends tragically as the 100th Bomb Group is outnumbered by its lethal German opponents. In Season 1 Episode 3, The Bloody Hundredth encounter their most formidable obstacle to date.
This is yet another gripping episode, with the storyline ultimately departing from its initial, monotonous framework to present fresh experiences and increased suspense. Colonel Harding discusses the squadron’s upcoming mission at the beginning of “Part Three.”
They are going to be a part of the biggest air force in human history. Together with two other task groups of comparable size, the 100th Bomb Group will launch a targeted attack on two ball-bearing factories and an assembly factory located in Regensburg, Germany.
To complete the task, the Bloody Hundredth must also plan a detour that would take them to Africa following the bombing.
Masters of the Air Season 1 Episode 3 Recap
The air crewmen resume their duties and preparations following the briefing. As the missions and casualties added up, many of their fellow brothers were brutally killed in action, and many turned to faith. To start their most recent operation, the air crewmen are impatiently waiting for the fog to lift.
However, the Colonel is told that his unit will be fighting on its own and will be part of the attack’s initial wave. Consequently, he is given the command to launch his squadron into combat without the assistance of the other two task groups.
It is essentially an impossible mission. Though they are unaware of this at first, the 100th Bomb Group soon learns that they are on their own and that their backup is not coming.
They soon find themselves in a dangerous and never-ending aerial combat with the German fighters. Although they take many hits of their own, the Americans can shoot down a couple of German planes. Due to these failures, the aircrew is forced to drop their bombs early, abandon the ship, and parachute into enemy territory.
Our main focus is on one of these damaged flights, where William Quinn tries to save his comrade Babyface. However, he is unable to liberate Babyface, and he must ditch his colleague right before the plane explodes. Babyface perishes in the blast.
Curt’s plane is then severely damaged as well. To save the lives of his injured co-pilot, he attempts to land the jet by himself while giving the order to his crewmates to bail out.
However, this valiant attempt comes to a devastating end when Curt’s plane blows up in collision. Curtis Biddick also seems to be deceased.
It was startling that the other two task forces left for their assignment five hours after the others did. Major Red and Colonel Harding are informed about this injustice back at base.
In the interim, they worry about the security of their crew. And quite rightly so, with the unit under heavy fire back in Germany. As many of his fellow crew members are slain or forced to parachute into enemy territory, Gale observes in dismay.
