Comedian Munya Chawawa is among the initial quartet of celebrities stepping into the kitchen for the latest edition of Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer. Set to grace the Channel 4 stage in the premiere, he will face off against Jodie Whittaker, Spencer Matthews, and Paloma Faith.

“Viewers will most likely recognise him from TV appearances on Taskmaster and Celebrity MasterChef in 2021,” said a source close to the production.

Chawawa, known for his wit and charm, previously showcased his culinary skills on Celebrity MasterChef.

Additionally, he ventured into documentary-style content with his show, Munya Chawawa: How to Survive a Dictator, where he explored Zimbabwe’s political landscape through the lens of Robert Mugabe’s regime, during a visit to South Africa.

In addition to his role in the Netflix hit The Sandman as Choronzon, Munya Chawawa rose to prominence through his engaging presence on social media platforms, particularly TikTok.

There, he gained recognition for his humorous videos that cleverly satirize various British issues.

Throughout lockdown, Chawawa brought laughter to audiences with characters like Jonny Oliver, a parody of Jamie Oliver, and Unknown P, a comical portrayal of a posh drill rapper.Despite his expanding career, Chawawa continues to delight fans with his witty skits across social media platforms.

Childhood & Education

Munya Chawawa, aged 30, was born in Derby, UK, but spent his formative years in Zimbabwe, according to reports from the Mirror. His family later relocated back to the UK, settling in Norwich, Norfolk, where he attended Notre Dame High School.

Reflecting on his roots, Chawawa expressed his deep connection to Zimbabwe in a 2020 interview with Patta, stating,

Regarding the creation of his character Unknown P, Chawawa explained that it was:

“As a nod towards the appropriation and false ownership of black culture that often happens in western societies.”

Munya Chawawa graduated with a degree in Psychology from the University of Sheffield in 2014. Reflecting on his educational journey, he remarked,

“I presented on the red carpet at the BRITs 2014, became a music presenter for PopShack TV and 4Music, and even became the first student in the UK to wear Google Glass to record their graduation.”
