A few months ago, Microsoft introduced Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR), a new AI-driven upscaling technology now featured in the latest CoPilot+ PCs equipped with Snapdragon X processors. Auto SR is designed to improve gaming performance by rendering games at a lower resolution to achieve higher frame rates, and then using sophisticated AI algorithms to upscale and enhance the visuals.

This technology can be applied to any game through a simple activation in Windows, aiming to make high-quality visuals more accessible without the need for extensive manual adjustments.

Auto SR offers two key benefits: automatic application and enhancement of existing games. Unlike other super-resolution technologies that may require manual configuration, Auto SR is designed to seamlessly improve both frame rates and image quality with minimal user intervention.

This feature is particularly appealing to gamers who prefer a straightforward setup and instant enhancements to their gaming experience, making it easier to enjoy games with visual improvements that surpass native 1080p quality.

Despite its promising capabilities, Auto SR is still in its early stages. Currently, only a few games are fully optimized for the technology, but it has already sparked significant interest, partly due to a recent in-depth analysis by Digital Foundry. The positive reception is underscored by notable figures in the gaming industry, such as Xbox’s Phil Spencer, who shared enthusiasm about the technology on social media.

Regarding its potential impact on Xbox consoles, Microsoft has not yet announced plans to integrate Auto SR into its console lineup. The company has mentioned aspirations to deliver enhancements across various formats and devices, which could eventually include Xbox. However, any implementation of Auto SR on consoles might not occur until the next generation of Xbox consoles, if at all.

Auto SR is seen as an intriguing new technology with notable potential, though it is not yet on par with established technologies like DLSS or XeSS. As Digital Foundry highlights, while it is not a game-changer in every respect, the quality improvements it offers are significant where it is effective. The technology’s progress will be closely watched by the gaming community as it develops further.
