An anime adaptation of My Wife Has No Emotion was announced for the sci-fi romantic comedy manga series. The anime is scheduled to air in July 2024 and will be produced by studio Tezuka Productions.

The series will be directed by Fumihiro Yoshimura, known for directing the anime “Endo and Kobayashi Live! The Latest on Tsundere Villainess Lieselotte.

Mina’s husband, the lead male character Takuma Kosugi, will be voiced by Toshiyuki Toyonaga, known for “Buddy Daddies” and “Bungo Stray Dogs”.

The anime announcement is accompanied by the launch of an official Twitter account for the series, as well as a preview of the key visual.

Sugiura started serializing the romantic comedy manga in Comic Flapper in August 2019. The seventh volume was published by Kadokawa in October 2023.

Seven Seas Entertainment got the manga licensed in English in December 2020, and they released the sixth volume on January 16.

The story unfolds in a world where some robots are made for human companionship, but the main robot character isn’t one of them.

She’s essentially a high-tech kitchen appliance designed to be easily overlooked, just to do her job. Then, unexpectedly, she becomes someone’s wife.

The story delves deeply into the implications of this situation. The characters are well-developed, and their relationship is remarkably mature and intimate for a manga in this genre.

The manga is a sweet, lighthearted, and comedic romance that doesn’t take long to dive into. The characters may not be anything extraordinary, but they are very easy to connect with.

The wholesome charm of this manga is endearing and delightful. The natural appeal of married life and cohabitation draws readers in effortlessly.

Many readers appreciated this manga for two main reasons its portrayal of machine intelligence as similar yet profoundly different from human intelligence, and Mina, the embodiment of this concept.

Finding a balance in robot stories, of any kind, can be challenging, even going back to the works of Asimov.

In many stories where robots are meant to fill a ‘human’ role, they are often depicted as essentially human, albeit with some mechanical parts, rather than having a fundamentally different mental makeup.

On the other hand, in stories where the ‘humanness’ of robots isn’t the central focus, even androids designed for human interaction are often portrayed as entirely alien. Readers believe this manga, despite its title, does an excellent job of striking this balance.

My Wife Has No Emotion is originally a manga series created by Jirou Sugiura. The manga started its publication in March 2019 and is ongoing.

It has been licensed for an English release by Seven Seas Entertainment. Currently, six volumes of the series are available in English, both digitally and physically, on platforms like Amazon.

Plot

As their bond grows, Takuma starts to develop feelings for Mina. However, the question remains: can a human and a robot ever have an equal and loving relationship?
