MyAnimeList Big Data: Insights for Japanese Anime Industry

MyAnimeList, the world’s largest anime database, is set to offer its extensive data analytics to Japanese companies, aiding in future business strategies and marketing approaches.

According to a press release from MyAnimeList Co., Ltd. on Feb. 16, 2024, the company has transformed its vast big data, sourced from over 18 million international users, into a user-friendly platform.

This data is now available to businesses through a beta version service. The analytics, without personally identifiable information, cover anime success rates across different countries and regions, member trends, ratings, and discussions.

This enables companies to gauge the effectiveness of their marketing campaigns. Furthermore, the data allows businesses to identify overlaps between user interests, offering valuable demographic insights into why certain shows resonate with audiences.

MyAnimeList’s data holds immense appeal for the Japanese anime and manga industries. With 99% of its users residing outside Japan, spanning 240 countries and regions, and boasting over 18 million subscribers, the platform hosts more than 320,000 anime and manga-related entries.

Considering the multitude of properties associated with each entry, this number surges to 12 million. The website notes that around 4 million “Add to List” actions occur weekly, contributing to the accumulation of global anime and manga trends.

Recent instances, such as journalist Atsuo Nakayama’s analysis of online news outlet President, showcase the potential of MyAnimeList’s data.

Nakayama’s study of 2023 anime membership trends revealed valuable insights, such as the growth patterns of popular series like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba compared to other titles like Oshi no Ko and Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku.

This information offers stakeholders critical insights into the effectiveness of their promotional efforts. While the marketing industry already heavily relies on data analysis, MyAnimeList’s tailored analytics possess the potential to influence the trajectory of the anime and manga industries significantly.

By reinforcing existing trends or uncovering latent fan preferences, this data provides invaluable insights for stakeholders. Despite potential enhancements from online surveys and user interviews, direct alterations to the user experience are expected to be minimal.
