Porter, who played for the Toronto Raptors, became the second player to face such action from Commissioner Adam Silver following Donald Sterling’s suspension in 2014. The league initiated the inquiry after noticing irregular betting activities related to Porter’s performance in a game on March 20.
The investigation revealed that Porter had shared information about his health before the game, leading to significant bets against his performance. Porter left the game early due to illness, aligning with the bets placed against him. Subsequently, the NBA launched a probe, preventing the payout of the bets in question.

Commissioner Adam Silver had previously cautioned against Porter’s actions, labeling them a “cardinal sin” in the NBA. Porter remained silent throughout the inquiry and didn’t return to play for the Raptors due to personal issues.
Furthermore, the league found that Porter, brother of Denver Nuggets’ Michael Porter Jr., had placed bets on NBA games using multiple accounts, totaling significant amounts.
Although Porter wasn’t directly involved in these bets, some involved parlays, including one where he bet against his own team, resulting in substantial losses.
