Quarterback Bailey Zappe of the New England Patriots appears unfazed by Mac Jones’ departure from the team. Our Insider reports have confirmed on Sunday that the Patriots had agreed to trade Jones, their former top-15 draft pick, to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a sixth-round pick.
The league shared the news on social media, and Zappe expressed his approval by liking the post, signaling his endorsement of the trade.
Jones, on the other hand, will now serve as the backup to Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence in his hometown of Jacksonville.
The Patriots faced challenges with Jones last season, managing a 2-9 record with him as the starter. Amidst these struggles, Zappe took over as the starting quarterback, leading to Jones being demoted to emergency quarterback for the season finale. Jones concluded the last two seasons with an 8-17 record as a starter.
Reportedly, New England’s quarterback situation became notably “toxic,” prompting Zappe to watch film in the wide receivers room instead of being in the quarterback room as a rookie. Alongside the lack of consistent victories, there was also limited communication between Jones and then-head coach Bill Belichick.
The New England Patriots, under the leadership of new head coach Jarod Mayo, are set for significant changes, including the departure of starting quarterback Mac Jones. Despite the option to retain Jones for his fifth year, the strained relationship in 2023 made his departure likely.
As Jones exits, the Patriots have acquired Bailey Zappe, but he is not considered the long-term solution as a starter. Zappe’s performance in six starts last season resulted in a 2-4 record, a 59.9% completion rate, 1,272 passing yards, six touchdowns, and nine interceptions. It is anticipated that Zappe will assume a backup role for the upcoming season.
With the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Patriots have the opportunity to secure a quarterback for the future, especially if the top two picks are not quarterbacks. Alternatively, they may explore the option of bringing in a veteran quarterback like Baker Mayfield or Joe Flacco to bring experience to the position.
